Welcome!

Archispectives LLC provides consulting, freelancing, and custom training and workshops to architectural and design firms wanting to achieve the huge boost in productivity (and fun) provided by working with a Building Information Model (BIM) workflow. In such an information-rich 3D workflow, drawings, 3D images, schedules and other data are automatically extracted, conflicts are detected, and multiple professions collaborate on common data. This coordination of information minimizes errors and omissions, reduces costs, maximizes client satisfaction, and simplifies collaboration. Changes that come late in the design process become easy, not something to dread.

Since 2001, I have worked with firms throughout the U.S. ranging in size from solo practitioners to 40 members. Freelance and subcontracting work has been entirely single-family and multi-family residential projects in mountain communities. Client projects have included hotels, mixed-use mid-rise, fire station, school campus additions and remodels, tenant improvements, log homes, and high-end residential.

Archispectives provides complete 3D BIM digital architecture workflow consulting and training at all levels to individuals and firms of all sizes:

  • Graphisoft ArchiCAD expert - award-winning beta tester since version 7, a moderator and leading contributor of ArchiCAD-talk forums, editor/contributor to ArchicadWiki, winner of numerous tech tip awards

  • I have been an invited ArchiCAD instructor / lecturer at conferences, retreats and workshops, developed custom GDL objects, ODBC database connectivity, and a minor custom API add-on

  • Assistance in creating custom templates for the automatic production of documents according to a firm's standards, allowing each future project to be completed with less effort than the previous one.

  • Basic through advanced training to become as productive as possible. Learn to work fast and smart.

  • Abvent Artlantis rendering training - compatible with all 3D modeling software

  • Adobe Photoshop; Informatix Piranesi; Adobe Dreamweaver; Video editing/DVD production

  • Google Earth terrain/imagery utilization - bringing Google data into your model or your model into Google

  • Database management - extraction of BIM data for various purposes

  • Energy analysis using EcoDesigner as well as other model-based analysis tools for greener buildings with smaller carbon footprints

  • MEP and structural collaboration

  • Structural conflict detection tools

  • Construction and facilities management coordination

  • Business processes

  • Help desk / troubleshooting services

  • Mac and Windows system and network configuration

BIM has become quite the buzz-word in architectural, construction and facilities management circles in recent years. It constitutes a key component in the processes which will eventually be used by all successful professionals connected with the built environment. But, did you know that forward-thinking architects have been using BIM concepts for over 20 years already, and that the US has lagged the world in this area? Do you know which aspects of BIM can be put to use today, and which are yet to be delivered? Do you know that it is possible for dozens of people to work on the same model at the same time? Do you know that working with intelligent 3D models is way more fun than working with 2D lines?

Switching to parametric, data-rich BIM from hand-drafting or 2D (or even intelligence-challenged 3D like SketchUp or Rhino) does require an outlay for equipment, software and learning. It requires a change in some office practices. My experience is that the productivity gains will pay for that outlay.

Get in touch to see how we can work together to address specific issues you or your staff are having, or to talk about the big picture. I look forward to hearing from you.

P.S. I do not sell any products, nor do I have any financial association with any firm whose products I might recommend. While I use ArchiCAD as the core of my own BIM workflow, I recognize that Autodesk Revit is a reasonable choice for many people (but I am not qualified to provide training for Revit).
